Why do we need pacifists and political pacifism today more than ever? How can conflicts at home and abroad be dealt with and resolved by civil means? And when is it necessary to intervene? The new issue of diesseits<\/em><\/a> deals with these and other questions . <\/p>\n\n

We talk to philosopher Julian Nida-R\u00fcmelin<\/a> and peace and conflict researcher Kristine Andra Avram<\/a>. We present a plea for humanist pacifism and look at Immanuel Kant’s writing “On Perpetual Peace”. We ask how far civil disobedience can go and learn how to talk sensitively to children about war and conflict. We also shed light on humanist military chaplaincy in Belgium and the upcoming World Humanist Congress in Copenhagen. Impressive field reports show the daily struggle for freedom of a determined woman in Iran<\/a> – and how a hotel was quickly turned into accommodation for refugees from Ukraine through joint efforts. <\/p>\n\n

“We are united in our longing for peace,” writes Katrin Raczynski, Executive Board Member of the Humanistischer Verband Deutschlands \u2013 Bundesverband, in the editorial <\/a>of the new issue of diesseits<\/em>. “And yet peace does not seem to be within our grasp: rarely have we experienced a time in which so many threats and uncertainties affect us at the same time and whose consequences we feel directly: the climate catastrophe, eroding democracies worldwide, wars and conflicts, the disregard for human rights in many places. We have to endure a lot of uncertainty, and we often feel powerless in the face of all these crises. So what can we do?” The new issue of diesseits<\/em> is an invitation to reflect and act. <\/p>\n\n
