Under the theme \u201cHumanism as Resistance,\u201d participants will spend the next two days discussing what humanism can contribute in an era of growing authoritarianism, religious nationalism, polarization, and disinformation. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maggie Ardiente, President of Humanists International, welcomed humanists from around the world:  <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"1350\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1080 \/ 1350;\" width=\"1080\" controls=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/humanismus.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Ottawa-Tag-2-45-4-zu-5-LinkedIn-Web-etc.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After host Martin Frith of Humanist Canada also welcomed the humanists, philosopher Rebecca Newberger Goldstein set the first substantive tone of the convention.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting with Spinoza, she drew a connection to entropy and ethics, as well as to the question of what people around the world can do to counter the forces of decay and disorder.
