June 21 is a day of celebration for humanists around the world. On this day, we reflect on the importance of humanist ideas and beliefs and defend our values.

“June 21 is our day as humanists. 33 years ago, the Humanists International proclaimed World Humanist Day in Oslo. Since then, humanists all over the world have celebrated together on this day.” This was explained today by Florian Zimmermann, President of the Humanist Association of Germany.

“We celebrate the values that unite us: Solidarity and self-determination, tolerance and diversity. We stand by these values and we defend them – at home and across borders. World Humanist Day is a symbol of our international solidarity.”

Events and festivals are being held all over Germany today to raise public awareness of humanism as a world view and philosophical approach to life. Today is also being used internationally to spread and defend the central values and principles of humanism. Humanists International has launched the Protect Humanists At Risk campaign to raise funds for the protection of humanists who are persecuted in their countries and whose lives and freedom are under threat.

The association calls for these achievements to be actively defended and for ways to be found to deal with the challenges of the present – without falling back into outdated gender roles.
