The right to self-determination is a core humanist value – right up to the end of life. This right is currently under threat from a parliamentary initiative by conservative MPs who are seeking to ban euthanasia as comprehensively as possible.
In particular, the issue of assisted suicide is at the center of the ongoing political and social debate. High-profile representatives of the Humanist Association of Germany have now taken a stand on this issue and put forward their own proposals. These include not only – under certain conditions – the controlled provision of medical assistance in dying, but also the introduction of qualified suicide counseling to prevent suicides.
