Legalization of egg donation and altruistic surrogacy?
Ethical, social and legal aspects of reproductive technologies
Keynote speech: Dr. Christine Zunke, Federal Commissioner for Women* and Diversity of the Humanist Association of Germany
Egg donation and surrogacy are currently prohibited in Germany. In some cases, however, they would be the only way to fulfill the desire for a biological child of one’s own. Experience from other countries shows that both egg donation and surrogacy require attractive remuneration and a wealth gap in order to attract enough young and healthy women. Due to the economic imbalance between egg donors and recipients as well as between surrogate mothers and the parents of the child, there is a risk that the legalization of these reproductive techniques will lead to the reproductive exploitation of women in socially and economically precarious situations in favour of the reproductive self-determination of the socially and economically privileged. The solutions proposed by the commission of experts appointed by the German government on this topic will be presented and discussed here.
