Issue 130 of our humanist magazine sheds light on the state of our democracy and asks what we can (and must) do to maintain, promote and defend this system. Read it now!

“Democracy cannot be taken for granted,” writes Christiane Friedrich, board member of the HVD Bundesverband, in the editorial of the this side . She continues: “Even in a democratic state like the Federal Republic of Germany, every individual must stand up for it. It is not enough to just enjoy the pleasant aspects of the existing democracy, but otherwise do nothing actively to preserve it. Here, too, it means taking active action and standing up vehemently when democracy is attacked or even damaged.”

What do constructive spaces for democratic discourse look like? How dangerous is fake news for our democracy? And what form does democratic participation take for young people?

In the new double issue, we look at the topic of democracy from different angles and also ask about the special responsibility of us humanists to protect and cultivate democracy.

Topics include:

  • the role of tolerance in democracy
  • Citizens’ councils as a new democratic participation instrument
  • Promoting democracy at municipal level
  • Threat to democracy through extremism
  • Hambach Castle as the “cradle of German democracy”
  • Religious freedom and democracy
  • and much more.

You can find selected articles from the new issue on our website diesseits.de. The complete issue 130 is also available as a free download!
