Issue no. 131 of our humanist magazine diesseits is about the big and small questions of medical ethics, about theoretical self-assurance and practical humanism, about humanist voices and positions on social debates, but also about decisions that each and every one of us has to make.
With an open humanist perspective, we address topics such as transplant medicine and animal ethics, pre-implantation diagnostics and circumcision. We explain our humanist positions on important legislative proposals: New regulation of abortion and the right to self-determined death. We ask about the opportunities and risks of health apps, look at the stagnating number of organ donations and explain why vaccination is humanistic. We remember the humanist health politician Julius Moses and present practical humanism in the context of humanist hospice work and the work of the Central Office for Living Wills. And the double issue contains many more exciting articles on medical issues.
“With prudence, reason and compassion, it is important to weigh up difficult ethical questions and approach answers – which can and should nevertheless be questioned again and again,” writes Kathrin Raczynski, member of the board of the HVD Bundesverband, in the editorial of the new this side issue: “It is a thought-provoking booklet in the very best humanist sense about the art of living well, the art of dying well and the ethical challenges on the road in between.”
