From 3 to 5 August, humanists will meet in Auckland, New Zealand, for the General Assembly of the IHEU (International Humanist and Ethical Union) and IHEYO (International Humanist and Ethical Youth Organization), as well as a conference organized by the Humanists Society of New Zealand.
A major step for IHEU and IHEYO is the renaming to Humanists International and Young Humanists International and the associated new corporate design. In addition, some board positions will be newly elected at the meetings and new members will be admitted. And, of course, we look back on the past year together and make plans for the coming year.
The conference will feature talks by many well-known humanist figures, including Leo Igwe and Gulalai Ismail. Topics will include the persecution of humanists and activists in some parts of the world, effective altruism and religious indoctrination in New Zealand schools.
The HVD and Bundes-JuHu are represented by Marieke Prien, who is also the president of IHEYO.
The IHEU is currently collecting donations for humanists who are persecuted and threatened because of their activities. More information and details on the “Protect Humanists At Risk 2018” fundraising campaign can be found here.
