The Humanist Association of Germany (HVD) generally welcomes the decision of the Federal Government to train imams in Germany and to strengthen research and teaching on Islam.
HVD criticizes the statements made by Federal President Horst Köhler and Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel before and during the 2nd Ecumenical Church Congress. At the same time, the association welcomes the opening of the major German churches to critical dialog and welcomes calls for fundamental corrections to the church’s regulatory structures.
The protection of the best interests of the child must be given a higher priority than the secrecy of confession in the Catholic Church. The Humanist Association of Germany is calling on the Federal Minister of Justice to amend the legal regulations accordingly.
At its winter meeting, the German Council of Science and Humanities recommended that the field of theology and religious studies be further developed in order to meet the growing religious pluralization and the increasing demand for scientific expertise in religious issues. He made recommendations for the development of Islamic theology at German universities.

On the occasion of the conference of the Humanist Academy Germany at the Friedrich Ebert Foundation on “Human dignity in the ‘ageing society'”, which begins tomorrow in Berlin, the President of the Humanist Association of Germany (HVD), Dr. Horst Groschopp, explains the social problem of “Dementia and self-determination”.
The Humanist Association (HVD) welcomes the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights on crucifixes, expects Europe-wide implementation and especially application in Germany. “The HVD sees its view confirmed by the Court’s ruling that crucifixes in classrooms constitute a violation of the state’s duty of neutrality and the religious freedom of pupils of non-Christian faith or ideological convictions,” explains the President of the HVD, Dr. Horst Groschopp.
“We are delighted that Ms. Käßmann is the first woman to be elected to lead the Protestant Church. Her views on love marriage and contraception differ from others in the churches. With regard to euthanasia, we have taken note with great interest of openings. We humanists also expect ethical dialogues beyond this, despite the fundamental differences in confession and partly conflicting interests of the organizations, as Pro Reli / Pro Ethik in Berlin has shown,” says Dr. Horst Groschopp about the election of Ms. Käßmann. “Culture wars” should be avoided in future. The HVD hopes for a Christian-humanistic dialog.
Before the summer, the Federal Ministry of Justice contacted the HVD with a request for comments on the recommendation of the Petitions Committee of the German Bundestag on questions of guardianship law in the event of the death of the person under guardianship. The HVD supports the petition and contributes its experience of practical humanism in order to find possible solutions.
