Assisted suicide: doctor acquitted – but legal costs remain

Berlin GP Dr. Turowski (68) told the Humanist Association after his acquittal: “I still don’t understand why this trial had to take place. I helped a very ill patient of mine, who had been suffering massively for 28 years, to end her life.” After nine days of trial, the Berlin district court acquitted the defendant of all guilt on March 8. However, despite the acquittal, the blameless, modest-looking doctor is still stuck with a five-figure sum for his legal costs. Supporters such as the Humanist Association of Germany (HVD) are therefore calling for donations.

Artificial nutrition must be medically justified

The Munich Higher Regional Court made legal history yesterday. For the first time, a claim for compensation for pain and suffering was awarded because a doctor had artificially prolonged the life of a seriously ill patient with dementia for years. The Humanist Association of Germany (HVD) welcomes the fact that doctors will in future be obliged to point out the unreasonable prolongation of artificial nutrition on their own initiative. The court did not consider the artificial feeding of the patient by means of a PEG tube to be medically indicated.

Federal association adopts new self-image

The IX. Federal Delegates’ Assembly of the Humanist Association of Germany (HVD) elected a new Executive Committee at the weekend. Florian Zimmermann is now the sixth President of the HVD Federal Association. He was previously responsible for international affairs, refugee policy and small regional associations on the federal association’s executive committee.
