The Humanist Association of Germany welcomes the fact that the Humanist Union (HU) is actively involved in the debate about state payments to the Protestant and Catholic churches. The ideologically neutral HU has published a compilation of the payments made since 1949, which amount to a total of around 14 billion euros. This does not include the payments made by the GDR, which was considered atheistic, amounting to over 600 million marks between 1949 and 1989.
