The scholarship holders of the Bertha von Suttner-Studienwerk (BvS) should have performed very well at school, at university or in extracurricular or non-university activities. In addition, social commitment, a critical approach to the central questions of human existence and a keen interest in interdisciplinary discourse play an important role at the BvS.
Students from all faculties, first-year students and doctoral candidates are eligible. Anyone who was not successful in the last round of applications is welcome to apply for a scholarship again. As the Bertha von Suttner-Studienwerk, unlike the religiously-oriented funding organizations, does not yet receive any state funding, doctoral candidates and students can currently only be supported with a grant of 300 euros per month. The standard funding period is two years, the minimum funding period is twelve months.
Applying for the Suttner Scholarship is straightforward and is explained on this application page. From August 1, the selection committee of the Studienwerk will review the applications received. Those who have passed this first round of the selection process will receive an invitation to an online interview. By the end of September, the ten “Suttner Scholars 2023” will have been selected so that the funding can flow in time for the start of the 2023/24 winter semester.
The Bertha von Suttner-Studienwerk currently supports 25 scholarship holders. They come from various academic disciplines, from mathematics, computer science, biology and medicine to economics, political and media sciences, psychology, design theory and philosophy. Some scholarship holders are just starting their studies, others are already working on their doctorates. Most of them are enrolled at German universities, while others are currently expanding their knowledge at Cambridge or MIT. The scholarship holders’ interests are wide-ranging, but what they have in common is a clear orientation towards humanistic values and a rational view of the world.
The Bertha von Suttner-Studienwerk (BvS) was founded in 2021 by the Humanist Association of Germany (HVD), the Giordano Bruno Foundation (gbs), the Humanist Academy of Germany (HAD) and the Federal Association of Humanist Students (BAG). With its help, humanist students should receive the same support as their religious fellow students. The BvS is supported by a renowned advisory board and numerous public figures, including many academics.
