These questions were the focus of the panel “Humanism as Multi-Strategic Resistance” at the 2026 World Humanist Congress in Ottawa. The discussion was moderated by Jonas Skorzak. The panel featured international humanists: Monica Belitoiu from Romania, Dr. Lone Ree Milkær from Denmark, and Katrin Raczynski and Prof. Dr. Ralf Schöppner from Germany. The latter delivered the opening remarks on the topic “Balance and Resistance.”
Katrin Raczynski emphasized how difficult it remains to find a democratic response to the rise of the far right: Despite significant efforts by politicians and civil society, they have not yet succeeded in reversing this trend in a sustainable way.
This makes it all the more important to reconnect with people who have lost faith in politics and democratic institutions.
Humanist organizations can make an important contribution, especially in polarized times, by creating spaces where controversies, differing perspectives, and even dissent can be tolerated and constructively addressed. Democratic renewal may therefore require not only “better messaging,” but above all positive experiences: strengthening political self-efficacy, genuine opportunities for participation, and a new sense of social belonging.
