HVD supports project to strengthen women’s rights to self-determined family planning.
The first rally entitled “For diversity and sexual self-determination in Germany – against the ban on abortion and Christian fundamentalism” will be held in Berlin on September 22, 2012 as a prelude to resistance against the increasing attempts to undermine women’s right to sexual self-determination in Germany and Europe, both politically and legally.
For years, religiously motivated and well-organized Christian fundamentalists in particular have been successfully mobilizing for high-profile demonstrations in numerous European cities to campaign for a Europe-wide and total ban on abortions.
Ideological, legal and even physical violence is now also being used to attack doctors and counseling facilities in Germany. Influential politicians and church representatives are pushing for the existing legislation to be tightened up.
This year, a growing number of active Christians will once again follow the call of Christian anti-abortion activists to “March for Life” and demand a Europe-wide ban on all abortions in the center of Berlin.
In the course of promoting the ban on abortions, myths about the numbers and consequences of abortions are spread and women who advocate self-determined family planning are criminalized and stigmatized. The supporters of the Working Group on Sexual Self-Determination do not want this to go unchallenged:
That is why this year, for the first time, they are holding a rally initiated by the Humanist Association of Germany to once again demand the human and fundamental right to diversity of lifestyles and sexual self-determination in a clearly audible manner.
“We want to show the organized Christian fundamentalists that we will defend ourselves against their totalitarian goals,” said Dr. Ines Scheibe, spokesperson for the rally.
