Since mid-2019, the “Humanistische Vereinigung KdöR” (HV), based in Nuremberg, has been operating as a new organization in the secular-humanist spectrum. This is the former Bavarian regional association of the Humanist Association of Germany, which terminated its membership of the HVD Federal Association on December 31, 2019.
We very much regret this split, which in our view can hardly be justified on ideological grounds, but can rather be seen as the result of special wishes for autonomy.
“It’s a shame that our friends from Franconia have chosen their independence over common ground,” says Erwin Kress, spokesperson for the board of the German Humanist Association – Federal Association. “This development had been on the cards for some time and was actively promoted by the HVD Bavaria.” This included, for example, independent memberships in the organizations Humanists International and the European Humanist Federation (EHF), in which the HVD regional associations were already represented by the HVD Federal Association. “Now we have to see how humanist views on life and practical humanism develop in both organizations and whether they will come together again at some point,” says Kress.
The Humanist Association, formerly HVD Bavaria, is now active beyond the state of Bavaria by founding a “Berlin Office” and a “Northern Regional Office”, and thus aims to establish itself nationwide as a competitor to the Humanist Association.
It is therefore all the more important for us to let our friends and partners know that the HVD with its numerous state associations – just last year, the Humanistische Gemeinschaft Hessen KdöR, another long-standing player, became a member – will continue to be your proven and reliable partner at both state and national level.
