HVD President congratulates Margot Käßmann on her EKD presidency

"We are delighted that Ms. Käßmann is the first woman to be elected to lead the Protestant Church. Her views on love marriage and contraception differ from others in the churches. With regard to euthanasia, we have taken note with great interest of openings. We humanists also expect ethical dialogues beyond this, despite the fundamental differences in confession and partly conflicting interests of the organizations, as Pro Reli / Pro Ethik in Berlin has shown," says Dr. Horst Groschopp about the election of Ms. Käßmann. "Culture wars" should be avoided in future. The HVD hopes for a Christian-humanistic dialog.

The HVD is counting on the newly elected leadership of the EKD to take an interest in the needs of non-denominational citizens, who now make up more than a third of the population in Germany and the majority in East Germany, and not just for missionary reasons.

In his congratulatory letter published alongside this statement, the HVD President addresses issues of plurality in the public culture of remembrance, commemoration and mourning. It also asks the President of the Council to advocate that the “dragnet search for church tax evaders” be discontinued in the church province of Berlin-Brandenburg-Schlesische Oberlausitz.

“The HVD is available for discussions and expert debates,” Dr. Groschopp concludes his letter of congratulations.
