The Vice President of the HVD Federal Association, Prof. Dr. Frieder Otto Wolf, who currently holds the office of President, told humanismus.de about the Science Council’s initiative:
“The HVD welcomes the Science Council’s initiative to sustainably modernize the current legal practice in Germany in the field of religions and world views. This applies in particular to his efforts to assert the freedom of research and teaching at theological faculties and church universities and to his attempt to free other world views from the narrow corset of Christian notions of confessionality.
We expressly welcome the differentiated view of the diverse reality of Islam that it expresses, which is a decisive prerequisite for the further development and implementation of a ‘European Islam’ that is truly compatible with modern societies. We ourselves believe it is important to remember and cultivate Arab and Islamic humanist traditions. We see this initiative as a challenge to further define our own ideological positions as an organized humanism, as well as to find forms of clear expression for the entire diversity of humanist positions and possibly to process them academically in a humanistic discipline and bundle them for teaching purposes.”
