World Humanist Day: Humanism needs encounters!

Zum World Humanist Day: Humanismus braucht Begegnung
Every year on June 21, humanists around the world celebrate World Humanist Day. But in the last two years, many celebrations and events had to be canceled due to the pandemic. Instead of face-to-face encounters, we were limited to digital. Even though the pandemic is not yet over, we can finally meet in person again this year on this important humanist holiday. We have gathered the voices of committed humanists.

Christiane Friedrich, board member of the HVD Federal Association and state spokesperson for the Humanist Community in Hesse, has written here about why encounters and exchange are essential for humanism:

What we have been missing for so long is finally possible again: Meetings, exchanges and get-togethers. Of course we could stay in contact with each other, talk to each other and see each other on screens. But digital contact is an incomplete substitute for real face-to-face encounters, where we can actually feel each other’s presence, perceive each other physically and interact with all our senses. A long-awaited sigh of relief after the pandemic, the long-awaited reunion! This is also important for our humanist celebration culture; our youth celebrations, which could finally be held again this year as usual by our national associations, have shown that there is a great desire for exchange and encounters. Let us also remember that our humanist values, such as solidarity, responsibility, self-determination and compassion, are lived above all in personal encounters. Humanity shows itself where we come together with others, it shows itself when we enter into relationships with others. And only then does it become clear to others, also in society. That is why it is so important that we celebrate our humanist values together. We humanists can finally meet again – and become more visible again!

What constitutes our practical humanism? What is important to us in the humanist encounter? We have collected the voices of committed humanists from our national associations. We hope you enjoy reading them!
