Peace is a basic humanistic concept and a humanitarian practice. The volume traces How does peace work? Humanist peace ethics and humanitarian practice In around 200 pages, the book explores the importance of peace ethics in the Greek Enlightenment and the Roman Republic, among the humanists of the modern era and finally in modern humanism after 1945.

In eleven texts, nine authors present examples of peace practice in the past and present: an ancient story about flight and refounding, humanitarianism, German foreign policy after 1989. The different points of view on the debate about humanistic pastoral care for soldiers in the German armed forces are presented – including an outlook to Belgium.
