“Happy New Year and a Happy New Year 2018!” With many traditional sayings, we no longer know where they actually come from. Are we figuratively slipping into a new year, or does the saying come from “Roscheschone”, the beginning of the year in Yiddish?
The only important thing is actually the tradition of giving people a warm greeting at the turn of the year. Because just like good intentions, a new beginning is always an opportunity for positive change.
The HVD Federal Association also made a fresh start in mid-September and elected a new Executive Committee. The many new perspectives will bring new energy to make our shared humanist worldview visible in society. The members of the Executive Board come from very different association traditions. This creates friction and friction creates warmth. After all, our strength lies precisely in our diversity. Because only if we remain open to new ideas do we have the opportunity to try out different ideas, combine them or even reject them from time to time.
Our largest regional association, the HVD Berlin-Brandenburg, is also facing a major innovation. For the first time, a worldview community has been granted the rights of a public corporation without having to justify its traditional status. It makes us proud to see that we are receiving this important political recognition due to the growing social significance of our practical humanism.
Our humanism is geared towards people and it moves society forward. Not just “as long as” or “against” other world views, but by its own power. And because we are not simply sliding forward, I would like to end with a similarly old saying that I find more appealing than the saying about a good slide. “You don’t recognize the future, you create it.”
