The Humanist Association Germany supports the broad social coalition of politicians, the media and the Christian churches that has formed in recent days against the new wave of hatred and hostility towards people from the Jewish culture. Frieder Otto Wolf went on to say that humanists, like many people in Germany, are watching the warlike escalation currently taking place in the Gaza Strip with great sadness. He hoped that this conflict would soon come to an end. However, the horror caused by the terrible news about the deaths of the Israeli and Palestinian civilian population should by no means be accepted as a justification for the rise of racist and anti-Semitic sentiment in Germany. Wherever there are statements or incitement that reflect the barbarism of the 20th century, an unequivocal rejection and, if necessary, the active involvement of the judiciary are necessary, Wolf continued. “All members of the Jewish communities and all citizens of Israel must have the feeling that they are safe and welcome here in Germany at all times. Freedom of opinion is an extremely valuable asset for us, but it must find its limits where other people are denigrated and attacked, and especially when racist and anti-Semitic convictions are expressed.”
