HVD condemns attack on DGHS President

The Federal Delegates' Assembly of the German Humanist Association deeply regrets and strongly condemns the recent butyric acid attack on Elke Baezner, President of the German Society for Humane Dying (DGHS). Wording of the resolution of the Federal Delegates' Meeting.

The assassin’s justification “Now you stink like your victims” clearly shows where the refusal to hold necessary social discussions objectively and without prejudice leads.

Elke Baezner and the DGHS do not kill people. Like us, they argue for the right to end one’s own life prematurely in an emergency and to accept help to do so.

This corresponds to the will of an overwhelming majority of the population, as many surveys show.

This needs to be discussed in society. Religiously motivated ideas of a God-pleasing death must not be used as a yardstick for political action and certainly not as a reason for personal persecution.

Adopted in Berlin on June 28, 2014.
